Nosema

Nosema is a common, though often unnoticed, disease that invades the digestive tracts of bees, causing dysentery.  Infection by nosema can result in widely variable effects on a colony, from slight slowing of brood development to complete collapse of the colony.

How It Spreads

Nosema is caused by spore-forming microsporidum called Nosema apis and the newly identified species, Nosema ceranae. Infection by nosema can result in widely variable effects on a colony, from slight slowing of brood development to complete collapse.

Symptoms

The most obvious sign of infection is staining on the inside or outside of the hive in early spring.

Diagnosis

Nosema-infected colonies will sometimes stain the inside and outside of their hives:

Treatment

Cultural controls for this disease include wintering only strong colonies with young vigorous queens, and making sure there is plenty of ripe honey in the hive in the right place. Fumagilin fed to colonies in the fall and new packages installed in the spring are effective against nosema.
