What Do You Have to Do to Be a Master Gardener?

There are two steps to becoming a Penn State Master Gardener:
- Participate in educational sessions on basic horticultural topics. In these sessions, you can learn more about things like botany, plant propagation, plant pathology, pest management, fruit and vegetable growing, landscape design, and pruning.
- Give a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service in your local community. This may involve answering home gardening and beekeeping questions over the phone, speaking to clubs or school groups, or participating in community beautification projects. Each succeeding year, certified Master Gardener volunteers will volunteer 20 hours and take 8 hours of advanced education classes.
Volunteering in a Master Gardener program is perhaps one of the greatest learning tools available to you. You will be on the front line of emerging horticulture issues that will require you to put your training to use and expand your knowledge base.
In addition, you will have access to advanced horticultural training by a variety of experts that will strengthen your gardening skills.
Understanding the interactions of insects and flowers is an important part of becoming a Master Gardener.
