Annuals

Many of the flowering plants in the landscape and garden are categorized by their life cycle characteristics.

An "annual" is a plant that completes its life cycle in one year. The seed germinates and the resulting plant grows throughout the season. Annuals then die at the end of the growing season.

Perennials

A "perennial" is a plant that lives for three or more years. It flowers and sets seeds just like an annual, but it doesn't die at the end of the growing season. Instead, it goes dormant. Perennials have the ability to survive winters by storing energy reserves underground, waiting for the right conditions to start growing once again.PennStateExtension+OLC-1006+2017+type@asset+block/S9_Perrenials.png" alt="Gallery of perennial plants that are good food for pollinators" style="box-sizing: border-box; border: 0px; vertical-align: middle; max-width: 100%; line-height: 1.4em; height: auto;">
